2020-02-17

So you've reached that time in your school career when you have to decide what your next step is for the rest of your life and put your dream of being a doctor to the ultimate test but you're unsure whether medical school is really for you or which medical school to pick. Medical school open days are perfect for feeling out where you belong. Why? Where? When? Let’s take a look...

Why should I attend medical school open days?

Open days are organised to provide you with the opportunity to meet and greet present students and your potential lecturers while soaking in the atmosphere of the medical school’s formal and informal vibe. You can ask questions, check out the facilities and see what the local area has to offer.

Key points to think about when attending a medical school open day:

  • What type of medical degree is it? Some medical schools throw students straight into the practical side of learning medicine via hospital work placements in the first year and others make students wait until much later on into the degree. Which would you prefer?
  • Would you live on-campus or off-campus? Try to make a point of checking out the standards of the accommodation while you’re there. Find out the different levels of cost.
  • Are there any lectures happening while you’re there that you could attend?
  • Some medical schools put on special discussion sessions for their open day, are there any that interest you? Do you need to book for it?
  • Societies and sports clubs - does the medical school have any that interest you?

Where and when should I attend medical school open days?

Due to the UCAS deadline being on the 15th October, most medical schools will have their open day during the summer months to give potential students plenty of time to consider their options.

Below, we have collected all the medical school’s dates and links you need to get organised and booked in with your chosen medical schools open days before the UCAS deadline.

If you’re unsure which medical schools to pick check out How to Choose the Best Medical School for You for tips on how to shortlist the huge choice of medical schools to suit you.
