How Music Can Help Focus on UCAT Study During COVID-19 Quarantine

UCAT Revision Tips

Now we’re all in COVID-19 lockdown, our homes may have become noisier, distracting and a difficult environment to concentrate in. With no escape to our cosy spots in the local cafes or libraries, we need to make the most of our homes and make them work for us. But how?

“Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand” Stevie Wonder.

Music is great for creating atmospheres or our own world as Stevie Wonder would say. Music has the magic of providing a way to mentally enter into a different reality other than the one we’re physically experiencing and allowing us to block out unwanted distractions.

Many people find it hard studying without music as the rhythm helps their flow of creative thinking while others prefer working in silence, finding music to be a distraction. But what if a quiet environment has become somewhat of a luxury? Music may just work as the new silence.

A bit of science behind the music that may help with studying UCAT:

In the early 1990’s the Mozart Effect was introduced by Dr. Gordon Shaw who after many years of research concluded that classical music aids spatial reasoning which may help with the Abstract Reasoning section of the UCAT

This was due to his investigations of the effects classical music had on a group of college students. Every student had a higher IQ after repeatedly being exposed to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major while revising.

There may not be much hard evidence to support this theory but it is worth a try. It may even improve your UCAT scores. Put your earphones in and have a listen to Classical Music for Reading on YouTube and see what you think.

Music to get you in the mood for UCAT study:

Research has shown that music increases dopamine in the brain and helps release emotions which can create a sense of relaxation and calm, refreshing us to take on the world again and refocus on what really matters.

When we’re in a happier mood we find problem-solving easier and our thoughts are more positive which often makes our outcomes better.  Try this Deep Focus Music to help you get into and stay in a calm mindset to take on your UCAT study.

Setting the scene of your perfect UCAT study space:

If you’re one of those who prefer to study in a busy cafe or another type of active environment try a favourite music genre of ours Jazz mixed in with the ambiance of a busy cafe and rain. Or how about setting the scene of a productive atmosphere like the library, trick your mind into thinking you really are in that cosy spot.

As Stevie Wonder wisely expresses, music is a language that we can all understand. If you prefer not to wear earphones and instead have it playing so others can hear it, it’s a great way to let them know your studying. If others know it’s your choice of genre to study to and they hear it coming from your room or study space they’ll know to leave you to it.
