Medical Schools and their UCAT Requirements

UCAT

What are the minimum scores that you need for each medical school? Knowledge is power; knowing what your desired and plan B medical school requirements are means you can tactfully tailor your application, be ready for any outcome and get into medical school.

What are the UCAT requirements?

The UCAT requirements vary quite drastically between medical schools. For example, some say that it only contributes toward the application without giving more information. However, many have hard thresholds, that would lead to your application being rejected straight away if your UCAT score is below it.

Let’s take a look at each UK medical school’s requirements:

Extremey long tabe of different medical schools and their UCAT requirements

As you can see, there are three broad groups.

1. Medical schools that use the UCAT alone to invite you to interview, including:

  • Glasgow
  • Keele (top 80% of the cohort - previously 2280 – and no band 4)
  • Liverpool (previously 2460 and no band 4)
  • Plymouth (previously 2390)
  • Sheffield (previously 2420)
  • Southampton
  • St Andrews (top 400 applicants)
  • Sunderland (top 8 deciles of cohort and no band 4)

2. Medical schools that use the UCAT along with other academic aspects in deciding invites for interviews, including:

  • Queen Mary London
  • St George’s

3. Medical schools that use the UCAT more broadly in your application. They do not set any hard boundaries on your UCAT scores, but it will influence your success including:

  • Aberdeen
  • Anglia Ruskin
  • Aston
  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • Dundee
  • East Anglia
  • Edinburgh (no band 4)
  • Exeter
  • Hull York (no band 4)
  • King’s College
  • Manchester (no band 4 and unlikely band 3)
  • Newcastle (no band 4)
  • Queen’s Belfast

Think tactically. If your score is not so great, look for the medical schools that do not use it for the interview selection alone.  If you have a high score, maximise your chance of success by applying to medical schools that value it highly.
