Admissions

2019-11-21

Did you not get any offers to study medicine in the UK? Or looking for something different other than the usual UK route into medicine? Ever considered studying medicine in Eastern Europe? Within this Q & A session, we answer some of your questions about studying medicine abroad.

If you missed Part 1 of this post and fancy a read of it, here it is: Medify’s Studying Medicine in Eastern Europe Q & A Session: Part 1.

Are all the qualifications recognised by the UK?

“Yes, definitely recognised in the UK. You can find information about European students and foreign students on the GMC website and all the universities they recognise.”

Is it taught in English? Do you have to learn the language?

“Your course is completely taught in English. However, you do learn the language on the side too, mainly to speak with locals when you're out and about and with patients who might not know English later on when you are in your clinical years. But it's very basic stuff. Nothing that people should be worried about. You'll be there for a pretty long time, so you'll pick it up along the way.”

What about funding?

“That's one of the negative points, as it is self-funded. Usually, parents help out with this. If not, there are a few students who try to come back to the UK as often as possible to fund their studies by doing jobs. There are ways of funding your degree other than getting a loan, and at the end of the day you will be loan free as well but it really does depend on how determined you are to succeed.”

How competitive is it?

“There are students who apply with C-grades and they definitely get in, it really depends on how well you perform in the entrance exam, rather than how well you did in your A-levels. If you don't get into one, you'll definitely get into another.”

Is it a case of paying money and they will let you in no matter your ability?

“No not at all, you have to pass the entrance exams. Recently it has been decided for UK MLA to standardise all doctors and student doctors within UK and Europe. Everyone has to show and prove themselves. It's not a case of, you’ve got bad grades so go study in Eastern Europe and you’ll just get into medicine, become a doctor without actually putting any work in. You have to put effort in. Many people are put off studying abroad due to thinking their degree would be worthless. But that's not the case as it's recognised by the GMC.”
