Have you decided on a career in Medicine? Or decided you would love to be a dentist? Are you unsure of what to do next or just want to make sure you have not missed a step on your road to your dream role? Here’s part 2 of your Admissions Roadmap.

Steps 1 to 5 on this Admissions Roadmap covers work experience, hobbies and entrance exams, if you missed this and would like to start your journey from the beginning, click here. If you have already started your journey in part 1, let’s get part 2 on the road.

UCAS Application:

When applying for medicine or dentistry, rather than applying straight to your chosen school you must instead apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). UCAS allows you to apply for up to 5 universities at once. As part of your UCAS application, you must include a personal statement highlighting your motivation to study medicine or dentistry, reflections on your work experience and show empathy. UCAS only allows 4000 characters or 47 lines for this. A lot of students struggle to perfect their personal statement, that is why we have created our PS Writer and Course to help guide you through the writing and content of your personal statement. Our PS reviewing services provides you with detailed feedback on improving your content and written English.

UCAS Reference:

Another requirement on your UCAS application is a reference from a professional who is an authoritarian position such as a teacher. This person must have known you for at least a year as they have to comment on your suitability to study medicine or dentistry at university level. For further help and advice on your UCAS reference take a look at our admissions guide here. This guide will inform you of what a reference actually is and how to gain a great one.

The Interview Process:

If the schools you have applied to like your UCAS application, personal statement, reference, and UCAT/BMAT score you will receive an invitation to their interview process. This could be a formal interview, an informal chat or mini-multiple interviews (MMI). All schools have a different selection process and interviewing method, it is best to check with your chosen schools so you can properly prepare.

A Conditional Offer:

If you are yet to gain the required qualifications such as A-Levels and your chosen medical or dental schools are satisfied with your interview performance, UCAT/BMAT scores and other aspects of your UCAS application, you will receive an unconditional offer. This means you will need to achieve specific grades within particular subjects in order to meet the conditions of the offer. If you meet these conditions, you will have a guaranteed place. However, if you do not meet the conditions, you will need to look at your options.

Enrolment:

Once you have met the conditions of your medical or dental school offer, you will be required to matriculate. This means officially register as a student with your number one choice of school. You will receive your student card which will usually be your library card too and be expected to show proof of funding for your tuition fees. When all the forms have been filled in and signed and the funding for the tuition fees confirmed, you can celebrate and begin your new chapter as a medical or dental student.
